after more than a decade of deep, expansive productions on labels such as detroit underground and cpu, annie hall arrives on musar for a record typically rich in texture and understated grooves. indebted to vintage electro and idm, halls music is no throwback, always looking forward and moving dancefloors in the most unexpected ways.

on the third release on his label, malin genie teams up with amsterdam resident and will & ink regular yaleesa hall for a trip into dubbed out techno and house territory. the ep opens with -oganesson,- an immersive track pivoting around gnarled, shape-shifting dub techno chords. -84- is a more energised cut, using a similar central melodic thread but driving it with a sprightly beat and playful threads of synth expression. -tournant- places the emphasis on textural sound design, embellishing a rugged techno rhythm with sonic matter that takes on an organic quality as it pulses and writhes around the beat. -coronal loop- finishes the ep off with an appropriately star-gazing jam that uses delay and reverb to great effect to create a sense of space in which nimble chord lines and other flourishes can cavort freely.

the second outing from yaleesa hall in this two-piece ep series on will & ink. the 13th release on the label packs a visceral punch across four fresh tracks that are perfect for dance floor deployment. first track daisy wright kicks off with minimal but impactful drum rhythms that eventually get cut up with tumbling sirens, hammering hits and blasts of dirty noise. it s hugely physical stuff, while follow up barbara adams is more stripped back and mysterious. icy hi hats tick, howling synths sound bring a sadness and the depth of stern field as sounds play out above, below and all around you is truly standout. harriet brown then sinks into a deeper electro groove with spangled bass, before a vip mix then slows things down to a dread fuelled dub wise swagger that eventually breaks out into oscillating, stuttering rave madness. it makes for one hell of a thrilling ride and kicks off a promising year for both yaleesa hall and the will & ink label.

70s disco slammer

4 years can feel like a really long time – -long time no see- was achim maerz frst wake up! ep back in 2013, -it s been a while- is his frst track on metal and machines and it s good to see that some things don t change. it s a true achim maerz track – focused on longing melodies, warmly distorted harmonies based on deep house foundations. -listening to machines- features a kickdrum like a steam hammer in factory hall. for the right mind, even a factory can be an inspiring place. benjamin brunn s -iron copper gold- follows his manner of creating timeless and eternal soundscapes. it is less playful and takes the tension to higher grounds. just like metal, it s cold being touched and it doesn t take long until it reaches body temperature. the fourth track express mode- was released on benjamin brunns drop lp in 2015. achim maerz remix sounds like a screwed-down uptempo house track – slow and heavy, but benjamin brunn s quirkiness is undeniably there.

yaleesa hall is back on his home label will & ink with two eps in quick succession. after releasing his debut album in 2016 this is the first solo output from the amsterdam based producer on the label. this first ep is entitled zoe hayley laura and features a trio of tracks that melt electro, techno and broken beats in arresting ways. opening up the ep is zoe price, a silky electro track with shooting synths and big downward bass strikes that add real depth. it s a urgent and arresting affair to wake up the floor. hayley roach then has much more forceful drums that come in one two punch combinations to the gut. synths writhe and gurgle up top as pads rise up and down the scale and the whole thing is brilliantly large. laura pomeroy then rocks back and forth on its heels, with train track like percussion and malfunctioning machine stabs. it s a real tussle between different elements and locks you right in as a result. once again then, the irrepressible yaleesa hall leads from the front.

as proprietors of the will & ink label, yaleesa hall & malin genie have been maintaining a busy and consistent release schedule of top notch techno sounds, largely releasing their own, well received, productions. the duo appeared on hypercolours 10 years compilation in 2016 with the excellent buchan trap, and weve been blessed to secure a full single release with the on-point pair. the mechanical funk of artin swings with plenty of assured groove, the shuffling hats, dense kicks and dubby stabs that ping pong across this fierce production mark this out as a real killer cut. dario & marco zenker, aka the zenker brothers, take time out from their busy ilian tape operations to remix artin into a brutal yet funky techno goliath. congas perpetually roll forward, with frenetic 909 hats and raw and ready stabs in what may well be one of the zenkers finest remixes to date. the essence of funk continues in hall & malins music, with cahen, a great slab of compelling techno that never slips too far into darkness, instead keeping an ever evolving groove and some abstract drone like synthesis to keep the mood buoyant. wrapping up the release is brown, a track that finishes as urgently as it starts, perhaps with a cap doffed to the purpose maker sounds of a certain jeff mills, but broadening the palette to allow some trippy sound architecture and an effective breakdown mid way through. modern day techno supplied by a duo that will most certainly flourish over the coming months, yaleesa hall & malin deliver the goods aplomb on this hypercolour single.

nice price deal !!! one of the most hotly-tipped female artists around right now, emika returns with the last warm up single for her forthcoming, self-titled debut album. remixes come from all quarters. berlin experimentalists brandt brauer frick turn in a stripped back 8 minute mix, operating on the borders between classical music and techno. kyle halls techno is, of course, born from the wellspring of detroit and his take on >pretend< reflects this. dj rashads more frenetic interpretation, on the other hand, brings us closer to a chicago take on witch-house.

this is a collection of works from british musician gp hall, recorded between 1994 and 1999. for over four decades, guitar in hand hall encountered many styles, jazz, blues, flamenco, rock, folk, and classical improvisation. all contributed to the creation of his unique style. emerging from the british blues boom of the 1960’s, he then followed a long and winding path through various scenes and cultures. in spain, he was influenced by flamenco master manitas del plata before touring europe with liverpool band casey jones & the governors. he was commissioned three times (twice by the arts council of great britain) for original music and was immersed in the avant-garde scene of the 1970’s as an improviser, a pioneer of electric flamenco and a composer of large-scale ensemble pieces. during the 1980’s hall turned his focus to soundtrack music before reinventing himself as the solo performer he is today. with this strong foundation he branched into a tactile expression of his craft, discovering a new style which he called industrial sound sculptures. these sonic compositions are performed on electric and acoustic guitars as well as the six-string bass and are played with various techniques and implements including slides, battery fans, the psaltery bow, razors, toys, velcro and crocodile clips which are fed through sound processors to create a rich sonic environment.

the latest outing on will & ink is a remix ep that finds parisian producers bambounou and simo cell team up for four reworked versions of yaleesa halls woodall lp. both artists are known for their releases on 50 weapons, livity sound and wisdom teeth. right here, on will & ink, two solo outings with another two collaborated remixes on the b-side showcase their dubbed out, stripped back and paranoid dark parisian trademark sound. their very specific sound sounds like little else and is a solid match with yaleesa hall and the amsterdam imprint as this ep proves.

wer die lp beim record store day 2012 verpasst hat, sollte jetzt zuschlagen, denn -live at acton- enthält eines der letzten konzerte von joe strummer. am 15. november 2002 spielte der britische polit-punk-veteran mit den mescaleros ein benefizkonzert in der londoner acton town hall, um streikende feuerwehrmänner zu unterstützen. im publikum saß damals auch ex-clash-kollege mick jones. der ließ es sich nicht nehmen, spontan bei einigen songs mitzuwirken - zum ersten und letzten mal seit 1983. nur einen monat später, am 22. dezember 2012, verstarb strummer überraschend im alter von 50 jahren.

the esteemed will & ink imprint hits the mini milestone of a tenth release by inviting old and new associates to remix some of the label s still essential back catalogue. the results are as weird and wonderful as you would expect of a label that has always gone its own way. mosca flips second lucas into something intense and brutal, with lashings of frazzled industrial synth sounds whipping about above pinging and high impact drums. italian chevel then transforms third lucas into five minutes of otherworldly machine made oddness. livity sound star asusu comes with a typically hi fidelity re-work of second carol. dubby and loopy, metallic and clean, it is a pristine track to get dance floors locked to a groove. and first carol reworked by its original producers yaleesa hall and malin, minimal dub with freaky sound design and the result is an earworm of a tune that burrows deep into your brain.

ursprünglich war nämlich schon 1998 ein album mit diesem titel als bootleg-variante erschienen. dabei handelt es sich jedoch fälschlicherweise um die aufnahme einer show aus manchester, statt aus der royal albert hall.

after three years and ten eps, amsterdam s will & ink label offers up its first full length from label favorite yaleesa hall and is called woodall. it explores texture, space and sound design in fascinating ways. since 2014 yaleesa hall has released four eps on the label and has become known for breakbeat laced stripped-down techno. this debut album finds the producer indulging a less dance floor focussed version of his sound, and one that is better suited to the full length format. explaining that his tracks most often start as -sound structures and experiments- that then get reworked for the club, here they stay closer to their original forms. woodall is sound sculpture that is electronic and synthetic but also made of real world sounds that are all truly absorbing. comes in gatefold sleeve.

next up on will & ink is a second release from yeleesa hall & malin, hot on the heels of their last collaborative effort, lucas, at the end of 2015. once again the mysterious hall and amsterdam/paris based oscillate music boss cook up some hard hitting house that is sonically inventive. opener first carol has hulking kicks and hits and a writhing, monstrous sounding synth line that brings real rawness and energy to the four-four beats all around it. some spooky little beat-less passage of eerie industrial sounds appear before second carol again slips into a well swung and purposeful groove. this one is rubbery and rolling, with dubbed out chords riding up and down and airy hats adding a sense of scale. another ep of contemporary club music of the highest order.

forceful, industrial and acidic, kamera’s ‘consignia’, taken from his ep ‘ventoux’, arrives reworked by two producers each as uncompromising as the source material. truncate steps up to delivers a remix that further encapsulates his precise vision of deep, raw techno. choosing to boldly strip back the foundations of the original track, his powerful rework performs subtle but precise surgery, creating a tense masterpiece of sustain and release, enveloping the dancefloor in thunderous claps and jittering rave samples. meanwhile, the so far elusive yaleesa hall is tapped for an offbeat, dub version of consignia, twisting the track into something altogether darker and stranger. a muddied, dare we say filthy bassline supports a chaotic framework of unpredictable drum patterns and mechanized noise, while still maintaining a hallucinogenic groove as the track’s original elements gasp for air underneath.

what can be said about dance mania? simply put, some of the rawest, most jacking house music ever committed to wax has come out on the chicago label. work it! from 1994, courtesy of the mighty parris mitchell & rj hall is slamming, an update of steve poindexter s classic work that m..therfucker but done dance mania style! heavyweight stuff. pair this with its alright on the flip, which takes a deeper turn and you ve got am essential 12inch dug deep from within the vaults. this one is rare too! now it s here again, remastered and reissued with the full consent of mr.mitchell too, what s messing with that? essential chicago business!

it was only a matter of time before the detroit / sheffield music connection was made again, this time with annie hall taking a break from co-running detroit underground to make an appearance on like minded sheffield label central processing unit. annie dedicates this e.p. to women in science (marie curie, lise meitner, elizabeth arden and caroline herschel) when tenured positions for women working in the field were extremely rare. although the tracks appear to be straight from the science lab, don t let that fool you as each track is brimming with laid back computer funk with subtle melodies that keep you hooked. annie has deviated from her signature fractured beats and delivered an easy listening electro affair that s equally at home on the dancefloor as it is chilling in high fidelity. tenured positions is a limited edition (300 copies worldwide) 12- vinyl with printed sleeve, paper inner and shrinkwrapped.
